How to Choose the Right Forged Iron for Your Game

Forged irons have long been the choice of serious golfers — but with so many options on the market, how do you know which one is right for your game? The answer comes down to three things: your swing, your handicap, and what you want to feel at impact.

What makes a forged iron different?

Forged irons are made from a single piece of soft carbon steel, pressed into shape under enormous pressure. The result is a denser, more consistent face and that unmistakable buttery feel at impact. Compare that to cast irons, which are poured into a mould and tend to feel harsher — especially on mishits.

If feedback matters to you — and for any golfer serious about improving, it should — forged is the way to go.

Matching the iron to your game

• Single-digit handicap: You're likely ready for a players iron or muscle back. Maximum workability, minimal forgiveness — but in the right hands, unmatched precision.
• Mid-handicap (10–18): A forged cavity back gives you the feel of a players iron with a little more forgiveness on off-centre strikes. The sweet spot for most improving golfers.
• Higher handicap: Look for a forged iron with a wider sole and more offset. You get the feel benefits of forging without sacrificing distance or consistency.

What about shaft selection?

The head is only half the equation. A forged iron paired with the wrong shaft will undermine everything. As a general rule — if you're swinging under 85mph, consider a regular or senior flex. Over 95mph, stiff or extra stiff. But the best way to know for sure? Get fitted.
